Grounded cargo ship a total loss now

Tue Mar 20 17:53:30 CET 2018 Timsen

The "Berg" which had been intentionally beached in the Feodosia Bay in the Black Sea was recognized as a total loss after a recent storm, which battered the Crimean coast. The ship sank with only the forecastle and the top of the superstructure remaining above the waterline. In ebruary salvors had siphoned all fuel, so the wreck did not pose an environmental threat. Salvage work underway

Tue Feb 13 17:10:10 CET 2018 Timsen

The Novorossiysk Rescue Team was currently carrying out refloating preparations at the "Berg". The procedure included pumping out the fuel oil and other oil-containing substances, as well as water from water-tight compartments. Attempts will be made to get the vessel afloat by utilising submerged pontoons. All actions to execute salvage, however, will depend on the actual physical condition of the vessel and, in particular, of its hull integrity.

Berg submerged by the stern

Sun Feb 04 13:08:59 CET 2018 Timsen

After the "Berg" was beached near the port of Feodosiya, the ship's stern was submerged by Feb 2. The ship had suffered al leak when entering the Black Sea, coming from the Don river and requested for assistance on Jan 31 at 11.35 p.m., located in the Feodosiya Bay 3.3 miles off Cape Chaud and 18 miles from the Feodosiya port. The ship listed three degrees to port side and was down by the bow at the time. The tug "Soth Breeze" was alerted on Feb 1 at 2.23 a.m., initially to assist in draining the water, and later took off all 12 crew members, eight from Azerbaijan and four from the Ukraine. They were safely taken to shore at 3 a.m. The ship after having been beached by the tug "RB 44" remained half submerged with the stern sunk on the bottom and part of the main deck flooded. There were 47,7 tons diesel fuel in the tanks. Divers found three holes below the water line. For the next few days the weather forecasters warned of a strong wind with gusts up to 25 meters per second.
