Yemeni forces foil suicide attack at Port Balhaf

Mon Nov 25 10:27:36 CET 2013 arnekiel

An official in the Yemeni army said that Yemeni forces foiled a suicide attack last night, aimed at the LNG export port in the province of Shabwa in the south east of the country. The official said that a booby-trapped boat approached from international waters, and passed security lines into Yemeni territorial waters in the area surrounding the Port of Balhaf. The port's radars and surveillance cameras spotted the boat when it bypassed the security lines, and naval forces moved immediately towards the boat and opened fire, causing it to explode and sink. The identity and number of those on the boat isn’t yet known. [GulfShip News 21/11/13]

Yemen LNG gas pipeline blown up again

Thu Nov 01 09:40:35 CET 2012 arnekiel

A gas pipeline feeding Yemen's only liquefied natural gas (LNG) export terminal was blown up again on Tuesday night, the operating company said on Wednesday, Reuters reports. "Yemen LNG confirms the sabotage of the 38 inch gas pipeline that links the block 18 to the Balhaf terminal on the Gulf of Aden," said the company, run by France's Total. "The explosion occurred at 2200 on Oct. 30, 2012 at 295 km north of Balhaf Liquefaction Plant." Yemen's oil and gas pipelines have been sabotaged repeatedly since anti-government protests last year created a power vacuum, which armed groups have exploited to cause fuel shortages and slash export earnings in the impoverished country.

Yemen LNG gas pipeline linked to Balhaf blown up again

Tue Sep 25 08:39:12 CEST 2012 arnekiel

As Reuters reports, a gas pipeline feeding Yemen's only liquefied natural gas (LNG) export terminal was blown up again in the early hours of Tuesday morning, the operating company said. Yemen's oil and gas pipelines have been repeatedly sabotaged since anti-government protests created a power vacuum in 2011 that armed groups have exploited to cause fuel shortages and slash export earnings for the impoverished country. The 320-km pipeline that supplies the $4.5-billion plant has been attacked several times by suspected al Qaeda-linked gunmen after military strikes on Islamist militants. "Yemen LNG confirms the sabotage of the 38-inch gas pipeline that links the block 18 to the Balhaf terminal on the Gulf of Aden," the company said in a statement, adding that nobody was injured in the blast. http://www.reuters.com/article/2012/09/25/yemen-lng-idUSL5E8KP0E620120925
