Chinese Cruise Ship Sunk By Tornado - Over 400 People Still Missing

Tue Jun 02 08:55:31 CEST 2015 arnekiel

At least five people are dead and over 440 people are still unaccounted for, after a tourist boat capsized on the Yangtze River in central Hubei province on Monday night. Rescue attempts are continuing, and officials said Tuesday morning that divers had heard sounds from within the ship’s hull, which may have been signs of life. By afternoon on Tuesday, 17 people, including the ship's captain, had been rescued, according to a report on CCTV, while authorities have so far recovered five bodies, Reuters reported. Frogmen from the Chinese navy, local troops and helicopters are aiding the rescue efforts, Xinhua, China's state-run agency, reported in a post on Twitter while another report from the agency said that the ship was not overloaded and was equipped with enough life jackets for those on board. The boat, the Eastern Star, was carrying 458 people, including 406 mainly elderly Chinese tourists, on a river cruise from the eastern city of Nanjing to Chongqing, when it was hit by a tornado. Reports say the accident occurred as many of the passengers were going to bed, and the vessel overturned within just one or two minutes, leaving the crew no time to sound a warning signal.
