Fire brigade withdrawn after blazing trawler started to list
Styrofoam caught fire on the "Geum Jeong No. 101" which was moored at the repair quay in Cape Town Harbour on Feb 18 at 1.20 a.m. prompting the City of Cape Town Fire Department to race to the rscene, joined by Transnet National Ports Authority (TNPA) crews. Efforts to extinguish the fire were abandoned after the ship started to list to port side due to accumulating fire water which made it unsafe for firefighters to continue putting out the blaze. A naval architect was deployed to assess the situation and determine the stability of the vessel. Although the fire had spread to the back of the vessel‚ it was said to be under control. Materials such as cardboard and plastic onboard the vessel were fueling the blaze. The City of Cape Town Fire Services were rendering boundary cooling from the quay side and a TNPA tug from the waterside. Oil booms were kept ready.
