The Bombay high court on Apr 17, 2010, directed the Mumbai port authorities to arrest the „Global Purity‟, which has been accused of sinking the Indian Coast Guard ship „Vivek‟. The coast guard ship sank in the Mumbai port on March 23. The Indian government moved the HC early this week, claiming damages worth around Rs169 crore. The "Global Purity" which was carrying a cargo of yellow peas, weighed about 28,000 metric tonnes, whereas the „Vivek" weighed only 1,100 metric tonnes. Asian Shipping has also filed a suit for limitation of liabilities and has argued that they are liable to pay only Rs20 crore. The court will now hear the case on June 14. Earlier, the Yellow Gate police arrested a Philippine national and captain of the "Global Purity".

The "Vivek", a 74 m long Indian Coast Guard vessel, sank following acollision with the "Global Purity" in the port of Mumbai on Mar 23, 2010. The collision happened at 4.23 p.m. during the berthing operation of Panamanian vessel when it hit the Coast Guard ship berthed at berth no. 10 of Indira Dock Docks where the Krasny Marine Services are situated. The Coast Guard ship suffered heavy ingress of water after the hull cracked, developed list a and sank alongside the berth. No loss of life or injury to any person and oil pollution has been reported. The Coast Guard vessel was docked for necessary repairs at berrth 10. Around 50 people, who were working on board the ship, jumped out to safety.
