River cruise ship caused 40-km-oil spill on the Danube
The "Avalon Passion" (ENI-No.: 02336601), sprang aleak and lost large amounts of diesel fuel on the Danube in the morning of May 16, 2018. The spill had a length of 30 kilometers and reached the Steyregge Bridge at 7 a.m. The river cruise ship berthed at the wharf Brandstatt in Pupping in the Eferding district. The fire rescue from Linz and several volunteer fire brigades were mobilized after a witness had remarked the spill at 6.20 a.m. The ship was surrounded by oil booms to keep the spill from spreading further. The ship had sailed from Vienna on May 15 at 9.45 p.m. and was destined to Amsterdam, ETA May 24. Avalon Waterways Christens Newest Ship, Avalon Passion
With a break of the Champagne bottle, Avalon Waterways christened Avalon Passion, a 166-passenger river vessel that will ply the Danube, on Apr. 13 at a ceremony in Linz, Austria. Jill Ellis, the head coach of the championship U.S. Women's National Soccer Team, served as the ship's godmother. Avalon chose Ellis because of her history of proving that with passion, dreams can come true, said Patrick Clark, Avalon's President and Managing Director. The ceremony took place under blue skies, with an Austrian band playing traditional music in the background. Snipping the line with scissors brought out on a blue pillow, Ellis smiled as the crew cheered and waved napkins from the ship's top deck. "We thought it would be interesting to have the godmother kick the bottle over the side," joked Burghardt Lell, Avalon's director of operations.
