Fri Apr 08 11:09:47 CEST 2011 arnekiel

Two ship officers are back in their Ukrainian homes after being imprisoned on false drug charges in Venezuela for more than three years, Fairplay confirmed today. The widely publicised case involved the August 2007 arrest of the 38,506dwt bulker "B ATLANTIC" in Lake Maracaibo after cocaine was found attached to the hull. Captain Volodymyr Ustymenko and second officer Yuriy Datchenko were held in Venezuela until their trial in August 2010. No evidence was presented against them, yet they were each sentenced to nine years. Stefano Magnelli of Bulker Charter & Management, commercial manager of B Atlantic, confirmed to Fairplay today that the officers have returned to Ukraine.
