Engine trouble in English Channel

Tue Jan 14 09:56:00 CET 2020 Timsen

The 'Beaumont', en route from Brest to Southampton, UK, with seven crew members on board, suffered problems with the engine due to a loose bolt on the exhaust manifold cylinder in position 50 54 48 N, 001 24 54 W, on Jän 13, 2020. The master took the decision to continue the voyage with slow speed since the repairs done on the engine was unsuccessful. The Solent Coastguard monitored the situation until the vessel had safely berthed at the bulk terminal in Southampton at 6 a.m. to deliver its cargo of 3.000 tons of scrap.

Engine failure in Dardanelles

Fri Sep 08 09:36:59 CEST 2017 Timsen

The "Baumont" suffered engine failure while transiting the Dardanelles in northern direction on Sep 7, 2017, around 08.30 a.m. near Kepez. A tug was sent to assist the freighter, which was taken to Karanlik Liman and anchored off Guzelyali to fix the problem. The "Beaumont" was en route from Brake to Constanta.

Ship withstood grounding with little damage

Thu Dec 13 09:41:00 CET 2012 Timsen

After ten hours on the rocks near Avilés the “Beaumont” could be pulled off by the tug “Maria de Maeztu” and resumed its voyage to the port which was only two miles away with its own power. At 4 p.m. it docked at a pier west of San Augustine where divers surveyed the hull. They only found a dent on starboard side in the foreship regioon. No oil spill had occurred in spite of a leak in the bow which, however, was only caused by a ballast tank being punctured. Luckily the ship had landed on a huge flat stone slab resembling to a huge ramp at the foot of the cliff which had kept it from running straight into the rocks. The “Beaumont” which was to load a cargo of 3500 tons wood pellets in the port and was expected to enter at 6 a.m. on Dec 12 passed the estuary of Avilés by yet unknown reasons without changing course at a speed of 11,5 knots, and finally ran head on onto the rocks of Cabo Negro, possibly led by autopilot. Neither before nor after the grounding the crew sent a distress call. An hour later, at 4.15. a.m., the Maritime Rescue Centre in Gijón observed the ship on its AIS system being off course. It got in touch with the “Beaumont”, and only now the crew confirmed the accident. The rescue helicopter Helimer 203 was immediately mobilized as well as the tug "Maria de Maeztu" and the rapid intervention vessel "Salvamar Rigel” and the strategic base for rescue and pollution at Santander and divers from the base in La Coruña. Also in attendance were members of the Civil Guard, Red Cross, the Gozón Police, Civil Protection and the Harbour Master. At noon the Territorial Contingency Plan for Accidental Marine Pollution (Placampa) was activated and the salvage planned for around 3 p.m. with the high tide. The “Maria de Maeztu” had already connected to the stern of the ship some hours before. The ship pumped off ballast water in anticipation of the maneuvers and slid off the rocks already at 1 p.m. The Alvargonzález Shipyard offered assistance in throughly assessing and repairing the damage, and the “Baumont” was expected there on Dec 13. The Spanish and British maritime authorities initiated an investigation to determine the causes that caused the grounding. The captain, his two officers and three deck hands had remained on board all the time and suffered no injuries.
