Medevac off Grays Harbor

Tue Aug 28 08:59:23 CEST 2018 Timsen

A US Coast Guard air crew medevaced a 32-year-old woman from he "Bell M. Shimada" over 40 miles northwest of Grays Harbor, Washington, in the evening of Aug 26, 2018, after she reportedly suffered a seizure. At 10:23 p.m. a watchstander at Coast Guard Station Grays Harbor in Westport was contacted by a crew member aboard the "Bell M. Shimada" who reported a woman aboard had sat down on the deck due to being dizzy, suffered a seizure and then temporarily lost consciousness. The watchstander notified command center personnel at Sector Columbia River, who in a conference call with the duty flight surgeon and captain of the vessel, determined a helicopter hoist was best due to safety concerns and medical needs. A surface transfer would have required the woman climb down a 6-foot ladder alone and, due to the potential seizure, needed to be seen by a neurologist with the next six hours. An MH-60 Jayhawk helicopter crew from the Coast Guard Columbia River deployed a rescue swimmer, who secured the woman in a stokes litter on deck before the air crew hoisted her from the vessel. It safely transferred the woman to waiting emergency medical service personnel, who then transported her to Columbia Memorial Hospital for further care.

Thu Jul 21 09:58:56 CEST 2016 Timsen

A Coast Guard boat crew medevaced a 28-year-old man reportedly suffering from extreme stomach pains aboard the "Bell M. Shimada" near Garibaldi on July 20, 2016. Watchstanders at Coast Guard Sector Columbia River received a request at 5:42 a.m. from the "Bell M. Shimada" for help transferring a crewmember reportedly suffering symptoms of potential appendicitis. A 47-foot Motor Life Boat crew from the Coast Guard Station Tillamook Bay safely transported the NOAA crewmember to emergency medical personnel, who transferred him from the station to Tillamook County Hospital. The weather at the time of the rescue was reported to be clear with light winds.
