Long range rescue mission of Hvide Sande lifeboat to assist disabled yacht
On Oct 14, 2016, at 2.30 a.m. the lifeboat Station Hvide Sande was alerted after the "Galactic Viking" had issued a distress call 63 miles west of the port. En route from Son in the Oslo-Fjord to Las Palmas with a crew of ten the main sail had torn in winds of 15-18 m/s and six meters wave height, and a rope had fouled the propeller. The yacht was drifting with a speed of 4-5 knots in SW direction. A cargo ship relayed the Mayday call, and the "Emile Robin" left port towards the yacht. It was the longest trip the boat had ever undertaken, and it took hours to get the yacht in tow. The lifeboat "Veskyst" which was berthed in Hirsthals was alerted too to evacuate the crew in case needed. 42 hours after the initial call the convoy reached the port on OCt 15 at 9 p,m. The crew of the yacht ordered a new sail in Thyborøn, and a diver was called to clear the propeller.
