Engine failure off Grey River

Wed Nov 24 09:58:25 CET 2021 Timsen

The 'Gallipoli' was disabled due to an engine failure with 16 people on board in pos. 47 33 54 N, 057 08 06 W, about two nautical miles southwest of Grey River on Nov 18, 2021, at 1.20 p.m. The crew carried out repairs which allowed the ferry to resume its voyage in the Gulf of St. Lawrence.

Ferry may remain out of service until fall

Thu May 17 11:37:03 CEST 2018 Timsen

The provincial government was trying to get the "Gallipoli" back in service on the southwest coast as soon as possible. The ferry has been in limbo since an incident during refit work at the Burry’s Shipyard in Clarenville. The vessel shifted while it was being moved, and the cradle in which it was being held, collapsed. The government has since terminated the contract with Burry’s and was working to get the vessel to NewDock in St. John’s to get the work completed. The work, however, was not expected to be completed until fall 2018.

Tug called to pull ferry back into the water

Mon Mar 12 11:38:04 CET 2018 Timsen

Burry's Shipyard has requested a tug to help pull the troubled "Gallipoli" back into the water. A vessel was sent to Clarenville to help tow the vessel, which has been out of service since Sept. 5, 2018. In mid-February, the ferry was left stalled on a marine railway, prompting a shutdown at Burry's Shipyard in Clarenville, where repair work was being done. Occupational Health and Safety issued a stop-work order at the site until an assessment could be done. The tug was on site on March 11 to assist the ferry which was originally supposed to have a 90-day scheduled refit. During the yard stay, more problems were found, necessitating further repairs to the ferry, which services the Ramea-Grey River-Burgeo route. Roughly $1.5 million have been spent on the refit, and the total cost were expected to reach $3 million.
