No fuel left on half submerged longliner
The grounded "Gunag Yuan Yu 239" on the Cakauyawa Reef, off Makuluva Island is free from any fuel leakage. Maritime Safety Authority of Fiji (MSAF) stated that the oil and other pollutants had been successfully removed from the ship which was resting on its starboard side after two unsuccessful attempts had been made to salvage it. Salvors were waiting for the right time to try again. The lingliner ran aground on Sep 13 about 60 metres away from where the naval patrol boat "Kiro" ran aground two months ago. Everything has been removed because it was intended to scuttle it,. The 14 crew members were rescued from the vessel by the Fiji Navy. The rescue operation was conducted by the crew of the "Kula" and navy divers. It was believed the grounding of the vessel was caused by a navigational error but details of the reason it ran aground were still being investigated. MSAF confirmed the vessel was registered in China, however, Golden Ocean Fishing Company Ltd denied earlier reports that the vessel belonged to them.
