Tanker lightered oil from wreck off Sweden

During August and September 2019, the "Henda" lightered 299 cbm oil from the wreck of the "Lindesnäs", assisted by the work vessel "Vina" east of Oxelösund. The tanker "Lindesnäs" sank in a snow storm in 1957 when it was on its way between Nynäshamn and Norrköping, being loaded with 1732 cubic meters of kerosene. The wreck was included in the Swedish Maritime Administration's list of environmentally hazardous wrecks in Swedish waters and was judged to be one of the 30 most environmentally hazardous wrecks. The wreck was located about 10 kilometers from the coast of Södermanland. The Danish company JD-Contractor AS was contracted with the removal of the oil. To perform the operation, the hull was penetrated in a controlled environment to avoid oil leakage. Thereafter, work began on emptying the tanks and pumping the oil (kerosene and diesel) to the "Henda". The oil was taken ashore for recycling, and the amount that could not be recovered was left for appropriate waste management. During the emptying operation, a 46-meter-long ghost yarn was also found, which was attached to the wreck. The ghost yarn was salvaged and taken ashore for recycling or destruction.
