Sunken barge recovered

Mon May 21 16:00:08 CEST 2018 Timsen

A grain barge was raised the Mississippi River after it hit a bridge at Vicksburg and sank. A contractor started the work on May 19. He built an A-frame at the site on May 18 to lift the barge. The river's channel was not blocked and vessels can avoid the sunken barge. The barge sank after it hit the older of two bridges at Vicksburg on May 16 as the "Jeffrey G" was traveling downriver with about 30 barges and one of the barges hit the bridge. Several others broke loose and had to be recovered.

Barge sank after bridge allision

Fri May 18 12:05:49 CEST 2018 Timsen

At least one barge has sunk after a string of 30 barges hit a bridge over the Mississippi River at Vicksburg. The "Jeffrey G" was traveling south downriver in the afternoon of May 17, 2018, when the accident happened. The tow barges loaded with grain were heading down the Mississippi River when one of the front barges hit the Old Highway 80 Bridge. Several barges broke free and one sank. Ships from Ergon Marine helped contain other loose barges. The Louisiana Department of Transportation was investigating the incident because they were responsible for the structure of the bridge.
