Disabled freighter towed to Lyness

Thu Nov 23 09:35:37 CET 2017 Timsen

On Nov 22, 2017, the "Jomi" reported dragging its anchor half a mile off the Siclair's Bay in an Easterly swell and being unable to get its engine started. The Wick Lifeboat was tasked by the Shetland Coastguard at 0935 a.m. to go to the aid of the cargo vessel. The relief boat presently stationed at Wick made best speed to the casualty. As the vessel was in danger of further slipping towards shore it was deemed best to call in the own boat which was going to sea on trials following an electronics refit, to attend as well in the case of the vessel having to be towed to deeper and safer water. As the lifeboats stood by, the tug "Einar" from Orkney Harbours was also tasked to the incident to tow the vessel to a safe haven. The "Einar" arrived on scene around 1.15 p.m., and with assistance from the lifeboat a tow was rigged and the cargo vessels anchors retrieved. The vessel was then towed to Scapa Flow for repairs. The Wick lifeboat returned to Wick around 2.30 p.m. and was once again made ready for service. The Coastguard emergency tug "Ievoli Black" was also deployed to the scene, shadowing the tow. The pilot boat "John Rae" joined the convoy as the ships entered Scapa Flow and the "Jomi" was berthed in the port of Lyness. The "Jomi" had been en route from Riga to Reykjavik with a cargo of timber and a crew of six on board.
