Disabled ferry grounded
The 'Kanuni Sultan Suleyman', en route from Istanbul to the Yalova ferry terminal, suffered a steering gear system failure and ran aground off the terminal on Sep 4, 2020, at 10 p.m. The vessel was refloated and towed to the ferry terminal, where passengers and cars were disembarked. No leaks, pollution, or injuries have been reported so far. An investigation file has been opened by Harbour Master. While the extent of damage was not yet clear, the ferry remained stationary at the Yalova terminal repair on Sep 5. Permanent repairs have been carried out under the supervision of class surveyors. Subsequently, sea trial and water ingress tests were conducted with satisfactorily results. A new set of trading documents was issued by the flag state authority and the classification society. On Oct 3 at 5.5 a.m. the ferry returned to Istanbul.
