Engine failure off Portland Bill
The 'King Challenger' sufferered an engine failure and an absence of oil pressure 17 miles southwest of Portland Bill in position 50 19 59.0 N, 002 52 34.0 W on Sep 17, 2020, at 2.20 p.m. The vessel was assisted by the Coast Guard tug from Berry Head and a Torbay RNLI lifeboat. The tug 'Camm Defiance' was deployed from Brixham and towed the vessel to the port of Brixham on Sep 18 at 12.45 a.m. It sailed again from the port after repairs on Sep 20 back to the fishing grounds in the English Channel.
Crew member died after falling over board
A fisherman from the "King Challenger" has died after falling overboard off the coast of Shetland on June 23, 2016. the UK Coastguard received a mayday broadcast from the vessel reporting a person overboard 17 nautical miles south-west of Scalloway. He was recovered from the water by the crew of the vessel. A UK Coastguard search-and-rescue helicopter based at Sumburgh was sent to the location. The casualty was winched on board and flown to Gilbert Bain Hospital. The Lerwick coastguard rescue team prepared a safe landing area for the helicopter. The MAIB has deployed a team to conduct an investigation.
