Container ship rescued yachtsman

Mon Nov 20 09:23:54 CET 2017 Timsen

The 67 year old Norwegian skipper of the yacht "Ilanga" which was distressed in 50 knot winds and very heavy seas east of Norfolk Island on Nov 18, was picked up on good health from the 12-metre yacht about 140 nautical miles northeast of Cape Brett on Nov 19 around 5 p.m. The rescuers battled southerly winds of 25 knots and swells of up to 3,5 meters to reach the damaged yacht. The "Southern Lily" arrived in Auckland and berthed at the Jellicoe Wharf in the afternoon. Earlier on Nov 18 RCCNZ had coordinated the rescue of a Kiwi yachtsman who had to abandon his yacht "Waimanu" 90 nautical miles east of Norfolk Island. In that case, a defence force C-130 Hercules circled over the location of the life raft while the cargo ship "Norfolk Guardian" was diverted to the location. The Kiwi yachtsman was taken on board the "Norfolk Guardian" and due to arrive at Norfolk Island. Container ship assisting distressed yachtsman

Sat Nov 18 16:55:01 CET 2017 Timsen

The Rescue Coordination Centre New Zealand on Nov 18, 2017, was in contact with a Norwegian yachtsman whose damaged yacht "Ilanga" was in 50 knot winds (90kmh) and very heavy seas. The yachtsman is the only person on board and activated his emergency beacon at 4.14 p.m. The "Ilanga" had damaged sails and rigging and a broken window, and had taken on some water but was not in danger of sinking. There has also been a fire in an electrical panel. The RCCNZ has diverted the "Southern Lily" to assist and was due to meet the yacht at about midday on Nov 19. Mayday calls were continuing to be relayed in case another ship might be closer. A New Zealand Defence Force P-3K2 Orion flew over the "Ilanga" in the evening and was to return to help the "Southern Lily" rendezvous with her.
