Engine damage off Ouessant

Om Dec 3, 2020, at 3.20 p.m., the 'Marguerita' suffered a propulsion damage 20 nautical miles north of Ouessant, at the exit of the upward track of the Ouessant traffic separatin scheme. The caaptain informed the CROSS Corsen, and shortly before midnight, by order of the Maritime Prefect of the Atlantic, the emergency tug 'Abeille Bourbon', which was already positioned near the Stiff lighthouse due to bad weather, joined the position of the vessel in difficulty to deal with any eventuality. Several repair attempts were made by the crew of the bulk carrier overnight but to no avail. During this time, the vessel slowly drifted until it was about ten nautical miles offshore at daybreak. Faced with this situation, and at the request of the maritime prefecture, its owner signed a private towing contract with the 'Abeilles Borubon' in order to tow it to the port of Brest. Towage commended on Dec 4 at 9.40 a.m. On Dec 5 at 7.20 a.m. the bulk carrier docked at the CIB Brest Shipyard. The 'Marguerita' had been enroute from Las Palmas to Antwerp with 21 crew members and a cargo of 26,000 tonnes of coal on board. German shipping company MST Mineralien Schiffahrt (MST) will pay a $3.2 million fine after pleading guilty to obstructing justice and falsifying oil record books in order to conceal pollution from one of its ships calling in Portland, Maine, the U.S. Justice Department has announced. German owners of paper industry ship indicted in Maine

PORTLAND, Maine — Two German shipping companies are facing federal charges of falsifying environmental records in an effort to cover up a ship’s crew dumping waste water and oil overboard. On Tuesday, a federal grand jury at the U.S. District Court in Portland indicted the owner and operator of cargo ship M/V Marguerita with failing to keep accurate pollution control records and falsifying records, according a statement from the Department of Justice. The grand jury brought nine charges against the two companies related to at least eight instances in 2016 and 2017 when ship entered U.S. waters with records that did not properly document bilge water having been dumped off Liberian-flagged vessel, according to the statement. It was unclear Wednesday whether the alleged discharges themselves were unlawful or where they took place. But court records indicate that the matter came to the attention of U.S. officials in June, soon before the Marguerita arrived in Portland.
