Report into work accident published

The quick action of a crew member on the 'Marliona' probably saved the life of his skipper when his arm was trapped by a trawl door on Feb 3, 2021, in Greencastle Harbour, County Donegal, an investigation pf the Marine Casualty Investigation Board (MCIB) has found. The vessel had been fishing off the west coast of Donegal and had returned to the port of Greencastle, to unload its catch and repair its fishing gear. During the repairs, the trawl door was lower than normal, and so the skipper had to reach down lower to grab the chain-link. The skipper’s left arm became trapped by a trawl door, causing severe injuries to his arm. The report noted that the trawl door was not secured adequately and that it was in the wrong position. This made it prone to movement from side to side. At the time of the incident, the vessel was taking a slight roll, adding to this movement. These factors, along with fatigue, were probable causes. "The absence of a risk assessment for this operation and the incorrect positioning of the trawl door were causative factors.” First aid was administered by another crew member, and the bleeding was stopped. The skipper was transferred by ambulance to hospital for his injuries, and his arm was saved. He was released the same day, but continued to receive treatment and only returned to work in May 2021.

Incident with RN warship

An investigation was underway following an incident between a Royal Navy warship and the Killybegs-registered 'Marliona' off the Donegal coast on July 28, 2020. An Air Corps maritime patrol aircraft was dispatched and two Irish naval ships placed on standby after the skipper of the fishing vessel reported that a UK frigate ordered him to leave the area where he was fishing 60 miles off the Irish coast. The HMS 'Lancaster' hailed the fishing vessel in the morning, informing the skipper they were commencing a joint operation with a submarine which would continue over the next three days. A maritime aircraft was sent to monitor the area where the UK warship was operating and two Irish naval vessels were redeployed. The 'Marliona' has since resumed fishing in the area which is west off Tory Island.
