Fire on wind farm vessel

On Aug 28, 2013, at 8.40 p.m. the volunteer crew of Barrow RNLI was paged to go to the aid of the "Wind Astute" at Barrow Wind Farm off Walney Island. Liverpool Coastguard had received a ‘Pan Pan’ message from the wind farm transfer vessel after the vessel with eight passengers aboard had suffered a fire in the port engine which had been contained and extinguished. As the vessel had one serviceable engine, the skipper decided to transfer his passengers to another vessel and then attempt to make the passage home to Barrow Port. He requested the assistance of the RNLI volunteers at Barrow to attend and stand by his vessel for the journey, in case of a total engine failure. The all weather lifeboat "Grace Dixon" was launched at 8.55 p.m. and arrived at the wind farm alongside the casualty at 9.10 p.m. The lifeboat then escorted the vessel to Barrow Channel before returning to station.
