One dead in barge fire
In the morning of Sep 28, 2015, at 5.30 a.m. a fire broke out aboard the "Odin", 1251 ts (EU-No.: 04003900) which was berthed in the port of Schwedt. When the deckhand remarked the fire in the cabin at the aft of the vessel, he alerted another ship crew. After attempts to extinguish the fire failed, the fire rescue from Schwedt and Vierraden was called which attended with 25 men tackled the fire with lots of foam. When the fire was out and the foam removed from the gutted galley and cabin area, they found a body, probably the 30 year old Polish master of the ship which had on board a cargo of ash and slag from Magdeburg and moored in the port on Sep 27. The deckhand initially gave unclear information and always spoke of three persons. He spoke no German and was obviously very drunk. It later emerged that the Crew had changed at the weekend and only two people had been on board at night. According to testimonies from the neighbouring ship the new crew had been drinking in the evening. The Police Eberswalde investigated regarding a possilbe homicide, but the cause of the fire, the cause of death and the identity of the dead have not yet been clarified beyond doubt until an autopsy was carried out by the coroner's office.
