Fumes from water in refrigeration system killed trawlermen

Fri Sep 02 12:54:19 CEST 2016 arnekiel

A marine investigation report, published yesterday, recommended that the Minister for Transport, Tourism and Sport issue a marine notice, warning crews on fishing vessels of the hazards associated with toxic gas generation and retention in refrigerated sea water (RSW) systems. The men who died were not named in the report conducted by the Marine Casualty Investigation Board. They were Aran Islands-born James Joyce, 27, and a Filipino, Joel Alama, 46. The 27m Rossaveal, Co Galway-based ship FV Oileán an Óir had been berthed in the Donegal port of Killybegs for routine maintenance when the double tragedy occurred around 1.30pm on August 24, 2015. Battle for life of two fishermen after inhaling toxic gases

Tue Aug 25 11:01:00 CEST 2015 Timsen

Medicals were battling to save the lives of two fishermen after they inhaled toxic gases on the "Oilean an Oir" on Aug 24, 2015, at 1.30 p.m. in Killybegs. The fishermen have been transferred to the intensive care unit at Letterkenny General Hospital where they were both put into an induced coma. Their condition last night was critical but stable. They were overcome by fumes when cleaning out a hold where the fish are held. It was empty and they found stagnant water in the pipework. It had been lying there for a while and it is believed the two men inhaled ammonia and hydrogen sulphide gas from organic matter that had been rotting. One guy was out first, and then the other guy went to help him but also ended up passing out. One of the victims was a 27-year-old from Galway, while the other aged 46 was from the Philippines. The scene was preserved by gardai and officials from the Health and Safety Authority arrived at the scene in the night.
