Container ship adrift off St. Catherine's Point

Fri Mar 01 13:26:34 CET 2019 Timsen

The "OOCL Japan", en route from Felixstowe to Port Said, was adrift due to a main engine leak in position 050 16 00.6 N, 001 43 24.6 W, 25 nautical miles southwest of St. Catherine's Point, on Feb 28, 2019, at 10.40 a.m. Repairs were completed within one hour, and the ship resumed its voyage, ETA March 8.

Car fell into a gap caused by grounding of container ship

Thu Jun 07 09:43:21 CEST 2018 Timsen

The "OOCL Japan" suffered a steering failure on June 6, 2018, at noon in the Suez Canal near kilometer mark 18. The ship veered off the fairway and struck the embankment, while transiting the canal in northern direction. Several dozen meters of the parallel road collapsed, and a passing car of the Suez Canal Authority fell into a gap in the street and had to be recovered with a crane which was mobilized to the accident site. Luckily no one was injured. The "OOCL Japan" which was stuck in the embankment could quickly be pulled off again by tugs. The Northbound convoy had to slow down to near stop timewise but resumed moving at normal speed within about half an hour. The "OOCL Japan" which had suffered minor damages continued the voyage from Singapore to Felixstowe, ETA June 14. Grounding in Suez Canal

Thu Oct 19 08:53:47 CEST 2017 Timsen

The "OOCL Japan", being enroute from Singapore to Felixstowe, ran aground during the transit of the Suez Canal on Oct 18, 2017, around noon. The steering gear malfunctioned, and the rudder went hard over and stayed put until the engineers fixed the glitch. The ship got stuck on the embankmemt and got perpendicular to the fairway. The "Maersk Kimi", which was following the container ship, was able to stop in time. Tugs were deployed to pull the "OOCL Japan" off again. The vessel suffered damage below the water line to the fore peak tank which required underwater repairs. On Oct 26 the vessel berthed in Felixstowe.
