Luxury yacht scrapped in sunken state

The workers of the company Arjona S.A. scrapped the sunken "Paradise" at Port de Andratx on March 23. Shovels crushed the boat until scarcely any remains were left. The technicians previously dismantled the ship's electrical installations. Operators installed containment barriers to prevent oil spills and leaks. The divers were able to retrieve a safe from the wreck and two jet skis that were stored in the garage. When the ship was built more than ten years ago, it cost about five million Euros. Before the storm sank it, it was valued at three million Euros. The remains of the ship were deposited in anti-pollution containers. On March 25 an operation will start to try to rescue the two engines out of the hull. The salvage has cost about 295,000 Euros so far. Salvage of luxury yacht failed

The salvage of the "Paradise" in the traveling dock of the Sailing Club in Port d'Andratx has so far failed. In spite of using three mobile cranes with a capacity of 120 tons the yacht with a weight of 132 tons and the water still inside the hull she did not come up enough. The cranes had to let her go again. The costs of the failed salvage were actually 295.000 Euro. More than 25 workers participated in the operatio. During the salvage work, absorbants were laid out to suck up the fuel, in case of leaks. The Civil Guard closely followed the attempt to remove the "Paradise" from the water, as they feared that contaminating liquid could be spilled. The agents of the Tax Patrol and the Civil Guard of the Sea have controlled all movements around the luxurious boat, valued at three million Euros and based in Kingstown. It was feared someone would take advantage of the gap in the hull to sneak inside and look for valuables. After all attempts have failed, now cranes with more lifting capacity will have to be brought in which may take until the end of the month. Paradise raised

A mobile crane raised the "Paradise", 134 ts, from the water in the Port d'Andratx on March 13, 10 days after she broke from a mooring and was destroyed in severe storm gusts on March 4. On March 9, the 9,000 liters of fuel were drained from the tanks. Since March 11 experts from the Ocean Diving, Manosub and Serviports companies, supported by Sail Club staff, had worked to move the boat and installed 12 lifting balloons to get the yacht from the bottom. The ship was presumed to be a total loss. The catamaran yacht "Barsowano" had already been recovered on March 6 by a mobile crane.
