Ferry ran aground off Long Island

Sat Aug 25 17:30:40 CEST 2012 Timsen

Quincy police have taken to safety 52 of the 145 passengers aboard the "Provincetown III" that ran aground off Long Island in the morning of Aug 25, 2012. They were transferred onto their vessel “The Guardian.” Boston police and Coast Guard vessels picked up the other passengers and crew aboard the ferry which got stuck off Nixes Mate, one of the smaller islands in the Boston Harbor Islands National Recreation Area, in Nubble Channel shortly before 9 a.m. The USCG Sector Boston launched two 45-foot response boats, the Station Point Allerton launched a 25-foot response boat. The Coast Guard Cutter "Flyingfish" was diverted. Quincy Police Department, Boston Police Department, Boston Fire Department, Weymouth Harbor Master, Massachusetts State Police, Sea Tow Boston, City Water Taxi, and the ferry "Provincetown II" were also on scene assisting. Passengers and crew of the ferry were transferred to the "Provincetown II" at 10.35 a.m. No injuries were reported and the boat did not appear to be taking on water. Coast Guard Marine Inspectors were conducting an investigation and inspection of the vessel. The "Provincetown III" was scheduled to re-float at the next high tide at about 6:30 p.m. The ferry had left Boston at 9 a.m. and was scheduled to arrive in Provincetown at noon.
