Former ferry sank after salvage from reef

Fri Apr 18 00:01:33 CEST 2014 Timsen

The "Raana", which had run onto the Brakan reef west of Hestskjæret off Averøy in the early morning of Apr 17, sank while being towed into Kristiansund in the Bremsnesfjord just outside the port. The "Waterbjørn" and the "Waterchief" of the Taubåtservice jointly with the owner and the "Erik Bye" of the NSSR had worked on the salvage, also the Coastguard tug "Boa Heimdal" atttended. The ship was pulled off the reef, but had taken on a lot of water. A pump was able to cope with the flooding until a bulkhead failed. The runner crew of three on board, among them the owner and one salvor, was saved by the "Waterbjørn" shortly before the "Raana" capsized and sank within three minutes at 2.43 p.m. on a water depth of 100 meters. The former ferry had been sold by the Akva Sjøservice AS to the Optiship AS on Apr 15, and it was the first trip with the new owner during which it ran aground transiting the Namsenfjord for ist future use as a service ship. The "Boa Heimdal" cleaned up debris, oil drums , etc., and has laid out absorbent booms to boom off an oil film that has spread on the water. However, there was no greater risk of Pollution. At 7 p.m. the tug Crew was in the process of completing the work.
