Abandoned yacht looted

Fri Dec 19 11:23:27 CET 2014 Timsen

The owner of the "Red Sky" has hit out at looters who took gear and personal belongings from the stricken yacht and had tried to tow the abandoned vessel. The yacht started taking water in heavy swells on its way to Sydney from the Gold Coast. In the aftermath of the rescue, the crew’s possessions were looted. The devastated crew has lost everything. An outboardm the dingy or even the bottle of Scotch the owner was saving for his 60th birthday or my other possessions were stolen. Once the yacht had been washed ashore the owner discovered the yacht’s rudder had been sliced by a cable and the hull was damaged from a buoy the yacht hit. Yacht evacuated after water ingress

Fri Dec 12 10:51:37 CET 2014 Timsen

The British tanker "British Loyalty" rescued the crew of four from the stricken "Red Sky" off the north coast of NSW early in the morning of Dec 12, 2014, after the boat’s crew activated an emergency beacon. The "Red Sky" was sailing from Sydney to Brisbane and had hit an unknown object about 14 nautical miles east of Evans Head just after 3 a.m. The yacht started taking on water in heavy swells and its bilge pump could not keep up. Weather conditions in the area were rough, with 30 knot winds and two to three metre seas. The Australian Maritime Safety Authority alerted ships in the area of the distressed boat and two merchant ships - the "Silver Pegasus" and "British Loyalty" - responded. The Life Saver Rescue Helicopter was tasked to the area with a life raft and a lifeline if necessary. But by the time the rescuers arrived the boat was already sheltering in the lea of the large oil tanker. The "British Loyalty" managed to come along side the stricken boat. They attached safety lines to the boat's bow and stern and the four yachties climbed up rope ladders to safety on board the vessel at about 5.30 a.m. None of them were injured and are expected to dock at Botany Bay on Dec 13 where they were to be met by the Water Police. The yacht was believed it would be washed ashore later.
