Report found out: Allision was fault of captain

Tue Mar 22 10:46:15 CET 2016 Timsen

One year after the sallision of the "Saint George" with the Brunsbüttel lock in the Kiel Canal the Federal Agency of Maritime Casualty Investigation (BSU) has published its final report on MAr 21, 2016. An error of the captain was the cause of the accident on MAr 20, 2015. He put the engine telegraph accidentally in the wrong direction so the ship increased speed instead of slowing down and slammed into the gate with five knots. The 1200 tons-gate had to be replaced and the lock was closed for 53 days. The ship berthed at the Voith-Quay in the North Port of Kiel at 5 p.m. and passed the locks of the Kiel Canal eastbound around 7 p.m., heading for an anchorage in the Kiel Bight for order where it dropped anchor at 9 p.m. German report with photo: http://www.nordic-market.de/news/20881/frachter_saint_george__verlaesst_nach_haverie_nobiskrug_werft.htm

Repair in Rendsburg

Tue Mar 24 15:48:25 CET 2015 Timsen

On Mar 24 at 3.30 a.m. the "Saint George" was towed out of the damaged lock in Brundsbüttel and entered the Kiel Canal again through the southern lock bound for the Nobiskrug-Yard in Rendsburg where she berthed at 10 a.m. for repairs which were expected to last until Easter. Part of the bulbous bow has to be replaced. The waiting time for the canal transit could meanwhile be reduced to 1-2 hours for ships of more than 125 meters length.
