Saipem awarded new offshore contracts in the Middle East and Norway

Italy’s Saipem said it has been awarded new offshore drilling contracts in Norway and the Middle East totalling over $100m. A contract was signed with Repsol Norge AS for the drilling of a well for operations in Norway, expected to commence in the third quarter of 2019. Work will be executed by the sixth-generation semisubmersible rig Scarabeo 8. Furthermore, Saipem has been awarded a new three-year contract in the Middle East. Operations are expected to begin in the fourth quarter of 2019 and involve the use of a high spec jackup rig. For this project, a vessel operated by Saipem will also be utilised.

Man rescued after 20 meter-fall

The "Esvagt Aurora" saved a man who had fallen overboard from the "Scarabeo 8" in the Barents Sea in the early morning of Feb 20, 2015 at 4.09 a.m. The ship was on stand-by at the platform and thus able to get the man out of the icy water four minutes after a drop of 15-20 meters from the platform. The man was picked up by a lifeboat from the "Esvagt Aurora" and talen aboard the vessel. A helicopter transferred him to the Hammerfest Hospital, where he arrived at 7 a.m. and then transferred to the Northern Norway University Hospital in Tromsø. He was not in any critical condition but suffered an eye injury needing treatment by medical specialists.

Platform was ready to be evacuated after it started to tilt

The "Scarabeo 8" on Sep 4, 2012, started to heel and had a list of 5,7 degrees at 3.15 p.m. The platform which is positioned in the Barents Sea had suffered water ingress in a ballast tank in wave heights of 2,1 metres and 20 knots wind. There were 140 crew on board. The crew was mustered on deck and ready for an evacutation. The ballast tank was emptied and the situation was under control around 5 p.m. The well was to be secured following the incident. The two supply boats "Troms Sirius" and "Stril Challenger" were on standby at the platform. Also a Sea King helicopter from Banak (Lakselv) was mobilized after the initial alert and sent to Hammerfest. At around 5.20 p.m., however, the helicopter returned. The "Scarabeo 8" had commenced the drilling of the exploration well 7220/10-1 on Salina prospect, production license PL 533, in the Barents Sea on Aug 12.
