Former Cook Strait ferry due to leave Wellington en route to Europe
The 'Condor Islander', formerly the Cook Strait ferry 'Straitsman', was due to leave Wellington on April 18, 2023, at midday. The Bluebridge ferry was sold to Condor Ferries in the UK, where it will ply the Portsmouth to Channel Islands route. The ship will take seven weeks to get to Europe, via the Panama Canal and Atlantic Ocean. The first stop for the ferry en route to the northern hemisphere will be Papeete. When it arrives in Europe, the 'Condor Islander' will enter dry dock for two months before entering service in the third quarter of this year. The ferry was sold on April 3 after plying the Cook Strait since 2010. Crew member injured in accident
A Bluebridge staff member was taken to the Wellington hospital after an incident involving a truck on the 'Straitsman'. The crew member was hit by a unit reversing on the main deck the ship on Feb 23, 2023, at 7.30 a.m. The man was treated in hospital for a broken wrist and released later that day and was recovering at home. Bluebridge was working with authorities to establish what happened, while inquiries were underway into the incident. Ferry clipped off navigation light
In the afternoon of Feb 13, 2019, the "Straitsman" hit a navigation light at the end of a wharf at the Wellington terminal. The service was already delayed for an hour due to the bad weather. The ferry, which was already running an hour late, clipped the navigation light, attached to the sea bed with a pile south of Kings Wharf, which is the most eastern of the two areas passengers disembark from. The Master then decided to discontinue berthing during a particularly strong wind gust. Once the gust had passed, he manoeuvred the ship into position again and berthed successfully. The ferry was assessed for damage before its next departure. There were no reports of injuries.
