Crew confined on board waiting for test results

Fri Nov 27 12:21:49 CET 2020 Timsen

The eight crew members of the 'Taunga Nui' were required to stay on board the ship off Avatiu while Te Marae Ora was taking swab tests. The vessel was expected to arrive on Nov 27, 2020, but the anticipated ETA was rescheduled and yet to be confirmed. Once the tests come back negative they can disembark. At this stage they will not be required to undertake supervised quarantine as they were tested within 96 hours of leaving Brisbane. By the time they arrive they would have been at sea for 14 days. Te Marae Ora has been checking in regularly in regards to the health of the crew; who were reportedly in good health, none have developed any Covid-like symptoms while at sea. The barge has sailed directly from Brisbane to Rarotonga. The crew members included seven Fiji nationals and a New Zealand national. They have received the negative Covid results for all crew dated Oct 28, 2020 completed on their arrival into Australia, and negative test results for all crew members dated Nov 7 within the 96 hours while in 14-day quarantine. The crew went directly to the barge from their quarantine hotel departing Brisbane on Nov 13.

Landing craft saved two castaways

Sat Apr 12 10:18:36 CEST 2014 Timsen

The "Svitzer Doolja" saved two castaways nearly 100 kilometers north of Derby on Apr 4, 2014. They had set out from Derby around 3.30 p.m. to Cone Bay. The current suddenly caught hold of their 8 meter motorboat and spun it around violently. One side tipped under a wave, water poured in, filling the boat and capsizing it. Both dived for the bottom to get deep enough to get past the side of his boat and up to the surface, finding themselves floating in the King Sound. The EPIRB emergency beacon was still attached to the clip-holder in the flooded cabin. Their life jackets were in a webbing bag, also attached to the boat. One had to dive back down and feel along the upside down boat to where the EPIRB was which took him about six dives. Then the men managed to get hold of their life-jackets too. They struggled into the life preservers and set off the EPIRB. The signal immediately set off alarms at the Rescue Coordination Centre in Canberra. Phone calls were made to the WA Police who contacted Derby police station, and an SAR Operation was launched. An aircraft picked up the emergency signal and set about triangulating where the signal was coming from to direct a vessel towards the men. The "Svitzer Doolja" got the men on board with a dinghy and took them to Koolan Island. The men, aged 49 and 58, were given a full medical checkup and flown back to the mainland on Apr 5 morning. The motorboat sank on a water depth of 25 meters.
