Greenpeace ended protest on Tangaroa

Tue Nov 24 10:16:59 CET 2015 Timsen

After nearly 10 hours of hanging on in strong winds, three Greenpeace protesters have come down from their perch on the gantry of the "Tangaroa" in the port of Wellinton on Nov 24, 2015. Police were waiting for them on the deck of the ship, which has been chartered by the oil company Chevron to do survey work off the East Coast. One by one, the protesters were led to a police van, after being verbally arrested earlier in the day. Earlier on the day, police climbed the ship's gantry twice in an effort to talk down the three protesters, but were rebuffed each time. One protester was hanging from the gantry structure, one had climbed a mast, and another was attached to a ladder. Greenpeace activists had stormed the research ship, claiming the vessel has been involved in oil exploration. Police had already arrested two other protesters, Genevieve Toop and Niamh O'Flynn, who boarded the ship. Happy Feet signal lost - beloved penguin gone off the radar

Tue Sep 13 07:48:38 CEST 2011 arnekiel

The beloved penquin Happy Feet, who stole the hearts of New Zealanders, has gone off the radar. Ten days after being dropped off from the Niwa research vessel Tangaroa into the ocean, 621km south of New Zealand, 3-year-old Happy Feet has again dived into a world of obscurity. The last signal received from the KiwiSat 202 satellite tracking device, attached to its tail feathers, was just after 8am last Friday. The curator of terrestrial vertebrates at Te Papa, Colin Miskelly, said he "didn't want to speculate - there is a question mark about what has happened".
