Heavy lift carrier completed Murchison platform removal

Fri Jul 14 09:01:25 CEST 2017 Timsen

CNR's Murchison platform removal in the UK North Sea has been completed by Heerema Marine Contractors (HMC) and AF Offshore Decom (jointly called HAF Decom) which were engaged for the full engineering, preparation, removal, and disposal (EPRD) of the Murchison platform, comprising of the 24,000-ton topside and a 14,000-ton jacket. On June 19, 2017, the "Thialf" safely offloaded the lower section of the Murchison Jacket on the quay of AFOD’s Environmental Base in Vats, marking the successful completion of the offshore removal phase of the Murchison platform. HMC's heavy lift vessels "Hermod" and "Thialf" were used to perform a full reverse installation of the Murchison topsides modules. After just 80 days, the topsides scope was completed, via 26 heavy lifts and five vessels transits from the field to Vats. The method and timing enabled this phase of the overall Murchison decommissioning project to be completed two years ahead of its original schedule Murchison was one of the North Sea’s largest, standing 254 metres from the seabed to the tip of the flare stack. It has been subjected to the harsh environment of the North Sea, with waves of up to 28m-high and wind speeds in excess of 50m/s (110mph) over its 36-year life. At peak production, in 1982, it produced 150,383 boe/d and overall it has produced about 400 MMboe, or about 50% of the oil in place.

Huge crane vessel THIALF to stay in Lerwick for a week

Tue Jul 02 10:54:07 CEST 2013 arnekiel

One of the largest crane vessels in the world arrived in Lerwick Harbour on July 1, 2013 after working on the Clair Ridge project 75km west of Shetland. Thialf had been involved in installing “jackets”, or platform legs, at the developing oil field on behalf of BP. Each of the jackets weighs in at roughly 22,000 tonnes and the platform’s “huge capability” was needed to install them. BP spokesman Matt Taylor told The Shetland Times the vessel was stopping in Lerwick for a crew change and minor repairs before embarking back to the oil field to install the second of the jackets. Thialf is expected to be staying in Lerwick for a week.
