Great losses due to delay

Fri Sep 09 10:43:36 CEST 2011 Timsen

The container cargo of the "Tropic Sun" which was supposed to arrive on August 29, eventually arrived at ST. John's on September 5, forcing the retailers to discard many crates of food, including strawberries, blueberries, blackberries, mushrooms, onions, leafy vegetables, which were all condemned. The five-day delay in a cargo shipment has left wholesalers and supermarket owners counting thousands of dollars in losses after having to discard a large amount of their produce and vegetables. Included in the cargo was goods belonging to the up-market The Epicurean and Island Provisions Limited in St. John’s. Both companies operate supermarkets and were forced to operate with limited stock for several days but now have returned to normal operations. The 4 containers of Epicurean were transferred to another ship that arrived in Antigua on Sep 5, a week behind schedule. They were still calculating their losses but they estimated that it would be in the range of thousands of dollars. The losses were constantly being revised because produce items which were thought to be good are turning bad very quickly on the shelves. Tropic Sun pulled from rocks

Fri Sep 02 10:24:06 CEST 2011 Timsen

The RMS Rhone dive site in the British Virgin Islands has reopened after the "Tropic Sun" was successfully pulled from the rocks on Sep 1 by two tugs with a third on standby. Afte rthe salvage plan was approved, the refloating operation started at 7:00 p.m., taking advantage of the rising tide. The vessel’s main engines were employed very judiciously to assist as necessary from time to time. The ship floated free at 10:10 p.m. and was moved away from the grounding site. The cargo ship was headed from Tortola to St. Maarten when it crashed into the rocks of Salt Island late on Aug 28, 2011. The vessel was anchored between Beef Island (The Bluff) and Buck Island awaiting an underwater examination by divers as appointed by the vessel’s classification society, Bureau Veritas. The islands' National Parks Trust announced on Sep 1 that the marine park is now safe for boaters and recreational diving and snorkelling can resume. The sunken steamer RMS "Rhone" at the heart of the park was not hit by the grounded ship. The British mail ship sank with 125 people aboard in 1869. The territory created a park around the wreck in 1980.

Bulbous bow bent by impact

Wed Aug 31 11:07:22 CEST 2011 Timsen

The "Tropic Sun" remains stuck about 4.7 miles south east of Road Town and is hard aground on rocks. The impact bent the submerged bulbous bow hard to port. The adjacent historic Wreck of the RMS Rhone park is closed until further notice. The site is known as one of the British Virgin Islands' most popular diving destinations. Inquiries by the BVI Port Authority, the BVI Shipping Registry, National Parks Trust and the Royal Virgin Island Police Force's Marine Unit continued on Aug 29. Three private salvage teams continued planning the ship's removal, and assessments revealed damage to the hull, but no leakage yet.
