Two bodies recovered
As of 11:00 a.m. on Feb 24, there were four vessels at the scene participating in the search for the missing crew members of the 'Van Don Ace'. The 'SAR 413' was commander on scene in addition to Cthe oast Guard Vessels 8005, 'Hai Duong 56' and 'Hai Duong 39' EC225 aircraft were mobilized too for air surveillance. At 5:00 p.m. nine crew members were rescued alive and two bodies recovered in Vung Tau waters in the Bà Ria-Vung Tàu province. On Feb 23 at 3:30 p.m. the MRCC had received a distress call after the ship, loaded with 5,800 m3 of wood and headed from the port of Rabaul to Cân Tho, had suffered an engine failure in bad weather and heeled over 15 degrees about 160 nautical miles southeast of Vung Tau. After the crew members abandoned the ship in life rafts, the communication was interrupted.
Nine rescued and ten missing from distressed vessel
The 'Van Don Ace' issued a distress signal and requested assistance in the South China Sea 162 nautical miles of Vung Tau in the afternoon of Feb 23, 2022, after developing a list of 20 degrees and being threatened to capsize. The last AIS of the already drifting vessel was dated around 5 a.m. UTC on Feb 23. An SAR operation was launched with the deployment of Vietnamese SAR vessels and merchant vessels in the vicinity. At 06.42 a.m. the MRCC Vietnam reported that out of 19 crew members of the vessel nine crew members have been rescued and ten remained missing. The crew had abandoned the vessel with life rafts 9 a.m. in pos. 08 33 00 N, 109 21 36 E´.
