Dutch containership strikes pier in Kobe

Sun Aug 21 09:55:31 CEST 2011 arnekiel

A 9,983-ton, Dutch-registered containership struck a pier early Friday in the oceanfront park at the foot of the Akashi-Kaikyo Bridge in Kobe, police and coast guard officials said. The Flevodijk left a 2-meter gash in the pier and knocked down a safety fence. No injuries were reported, they said. A 26-year-old Ukrainian crew member who was on watch was quoted as telling investigators he had nodded off at the time of the accident. They are questioning the Russian captain and his crew over possible negligence. The ship was sailing from China to the port of Osaka when it hit the pier wall at about 4:40 a.m. The vessel was on autopilot at the time. An official at the Kobe base of the Japan Coast Guard said ships are usually manually steered in the Akashi Strait because of strong currents.
