ISLE OF MULL

Misc. for ports and Vessels

The 'Isle of Mull' return was pushed back a little further. CalMac's expectation was to have the evacuation slides repaired and be ready to re- enter service by June 25. That represented a 10 day extension on the original plan, which would have seen her return by June 15. Due to the knock-on effect of delays to the 'Finlaggan's over-haul, that date was pushed back another four days to June 29. The ferry will be heading for dry-dock in Greenock on May 24, to have her new marine evacuation slides fitted. That gives five weeks to have the work done, to return just before the peak month of July. All those with affected bookings should be contacted by CalMac.

Local authorities in Russia’s southern Krasnodar Krai confirmed that drones damaged three grain storage reservoirs at the KSK terminal, one of the region’s most important export facilities. The attack sparked a fire at the site. The terminal, which can store up to 220,000 tons of grain and handled over 10 million tons in 2024, is operated by the Moscow-based Delo Group.Delo Group, which assured that the terminal was continuing to function in line with internal procedures and guidance from authorities. Drone strikes had also caused fires in nearby areas, including Taman and Anapa. Russian electronic warfare systems had jammed the drones, causing them to fall into residential areas. Bandar Abbas

Casualty

The fires caused by the huge explosion in the commercial port of Bandar Abbas on the morning of April 26 were still spreading two days later. Heat and fire detected by the NASA FIRMS system on the morning of April 29 still showed no signs of any retreat, with the area affected now having spread from the container park to the quays of the port itself. The firefighting services have been overwhelmed, even though reinforcements have been brought in from as far away as Tehran; two days after the initial explosion, some areas of the fire were not being tackled at all, and in other areas confused port workers who should have been evacuated were still wandering around or sheltering in empty containers in what was clearly still a dangerous area.

Houston

Casualty

On April 22, 2025,at 4 p.m. a gas leak on a barge on the Houston Ship Channel prompted community alerts. but no air quality threats have been detected. A vapor release occurred aboard a barge of the Kirby Inland Marine at the Targa Resources dock in Galena, Greater Houston, at the at 12510 American Petroleum Road. The leak released an unspecified quantity of butadiene, an industrial gas used for making plastics and synthetic rubber (like car tires). 1,3-butadiene is an EPA-listed carcinogen, an inhalation irritant, and highly flammable, but breaks down quickly in the atmosphere, limiting the time in which it can have an effect. The leak occurred because of a broken valve. It was contained at 10 p.m., and the barge was towed to a safe location belonging to the Kirby Inland Marine for further evaluations. The Targa Resources dock on the Houston Ship Channel has reopened to full service by the U.S. Coast Guard on April 23 at 3 a.-m. No injuries were reported from the gas leak. NCL SALTEN

Casualty

There was suspicion that the grounding of the 'NCL Salten' near Trondheim occurred after a 30-year-old officer who was responsible for the navigation of the ship had fallen asleep, the Public Prosecution Service (OM) announced on May 23, The local police in Norway, the Trøndelag Police District, have arrested the second officer of the ship. The officer who was alone on the bridge of the NCL Salten admitted during questioning that he had fallen asleep while navigating the vessel. The police have no indications that a technical defect caused the grounding of the ship. There was nothing to indicate that an evasive manoeuvre was carried out just before the grounding. They found ship documents, including the deck logbook, which shows that he was on duty and alone on the bridge. The individual is being identified as a Ukrainian citizen in his 30s who was on watch at the time of the incident. He has been charged under Norwegian law with “negligent navigation,” with the police stating that the law requires a ship to be navigated in such a way that there is no danger to life and health, the environment, or material assets. The vessel had entered the Trondheim fjord normally at 16 knots. However, at the appointed spot where the vessel should have made a turn to starboard to enter Orkanger, it proceeded forward grounding after 5 a.m. in Byneset, some 24 kilometres west of Trondheim. The police report the investigation is proceeding looking at additional issues including whether the vessel was adhering to the work and rest requirements for the crew. The captain of the vessel as part of the standard procedure in the investigation has also been listed as a suspect in the case. On May 23, parts of the crew on board were interviewed. The focus of the investigation is to establish the sequence of events and determine how this incident could occur, as well as to assess whether the bridge was manned in accordance with applicable regulations. The police reported on May 22, that they had taken control of documents from the vessel and its log for review. The Norwegian Coastal Administration is also being kept apprised of the investigation while it is also responsible for monitoring the vessel and the salvage efforts. A survey has found damage to the vessel’s forecastle and some ballast tanks. The damage is not too severe that it will make the rescue more difficult but all the factors need to be accounted for in the salvage plan. Also, the damaged tanks are only filled with seawater so there is no immediate threat of pollution. The shipping company is responsible for arranging the salvage but the Administration will review the plan. It is noting that it can ask the shipping company for additional measures as necessary to ensure preparedness to prevent pollution or damage. The Administration expects the planning to require some time and it would then review the information. No timeline has been offered for when the vessel will be refloated. An initial attempt, made at high tide on the morning of May 22, just before 09:00 a.m., was unsuccessful. A second attempt, at 9:40 pm. was postponed. A landslide had been detected near the location of the 'NCL Salten'. ‘The area is known for its large amount of clay and this landslide can now be linked to the vibrations that occurred when the ship ran aground. When the ship ran aground at around 05:00, he said, the water level rose 8 to 10 metres from the coast,, pushing away a 100-metre-wide strip of beach. A nearby house in which three people were staying was temporarily evacuated as a precaution. Before the refloating of the ship can begin gain, several surveys of the seabed must be carried out. Geotechnicians have been asked to conduct further research, especially around the ship . The Shipping company North Sea Container Line said it was ‘pleased that no one was injured in the grounding and that everyone is safe. The Norwegian Coastguard attended with the 'Njord-W 333'. The tug 'Boa Brage' (IMO 9551894) was enroute to Trondheim with an ETA as of May 3 at 9 p.m..
