Speed Limit of 10 knots for Commercial Shipping in Port of Hamburg
In future, commercial shipping will have to observe a speed limit of 10 knots in the port of Hamburg. The speed limit is to help reduce erosions on the river embankment caused by waves generated by ships.
So far the commercial shipping regulations applicable on the river Elbe require ships to travel at a “safe speed”. The safe speed of a ship is determined based on the ship itself, the fairway and the water depth, the embankments as well as the tidal conditions and the impacts of weather.
The competent water police authorities of the federal government and the port of Hamburg have decided to impose speed limits; the maximum speed allowed in the port of Hamburg now is 10 knots (about 19 kilometres per hour). Incorporating this speed limit in the port legislation is a necessary and consequential measure. The newly intro-duced maximum speed will, however, not have any adverse effect on the nav-igational safety of ships and smooth vessel traffic. The speed limits are im-posed to ensure national consistency and avoid negative impacts on the envi-ronment. The new regulation does not apply to sports boats. Their maximum speed limit in the port of Hamburg is 12 knots (22 kilometres per hour).
Konecranes Delivers Two Ship-to-Shore Cranes to Mozambique port of Beira
At the beginning of February 2013, two Konecranes ship-to-shore (STS) cranes ordered by Cornelder de Moçambique (CdM) were loaded onto ships, fully-erected, and departed the manufacturing site. The STS cranes are now operating in the Port of Beira’s container terminal, one of the most modern terminals in southern Africa. They have an outreach of 40 m, a lifting capacity of 65 tons under spreader, and they are designed for twin lift operation.
Jiangsu Hongqiang pens first heavylift vessel deal with german owner
Jiangsu Hongqiang Marine Heavy Industry has inked a shipbuilding contract with an unspecified German owner to construct four 12,500dwt multi-purpose heavy lift vessels. It is the first heavylift vessel order it has received.
The construction of the vessels will start in the second half of this year and delivery is scheduled in the first half of 2015. The price for each vessel is $18.5m. [SinoShipNews 28/05/13]

Rotterdam opens first phase of giant Maasvlakte 2 container hub
ROTTERDAM has on May 22 officially opened the first phase of Europe's largest container terminal hub, Maasvlakte 2, which is expected to unleash a fierce battle for cargo across the Le Havre-Hamburg port range at a time of sluggish traffic growth. The first phase was completed on schedule and came in EUR150 million (US$195 million) under its EUR1.7 billion budget, said Hans Smits, CEO of the Port of Rotterdam Authority. "From today, Maasvlakte 2 is an integral part of the port area ... accessible by road, rail and water," he said. Speaking at the opening of the new facility to shipping, Melanie Schultz van Haegen, Minister of Infrastructure and the Environment, commented, "With Maasvlakte 2, the Netherlands is throwing the door wide open to the new generation of container ships. And we offer space for the latest terminals." Maasvlakte 2 is built on land reclaimed from the North Sea and will become Europe's largest container hub by the end of 2014 when two privately owned terminals with a combined annual capacity of 8.5 million TEU are due to start operations.
APM Terminals will open the first terminal, with a capacity of 4.5 million TEU, followed by a four million TEU facility being built by a joint venture between DP World and four ocean carriers - MOL, CMA CGM, Hyundai Merchant Marine and APL.
The port is investing around $4.5 billion in Maasvlakte 2, which will also feature industrial and logistics parks, while the total private investment is put at some $20 billion. More at www.portofrotterd...
New port depth in Santos expected by beginning of June
In about ten days, the Santos Port is expected to be able to allow vessels with draft greater than the actual accepted limit, enabling them to to carry more cargo per voyage and reducing logistic costs for cargo handled in the region. The current depth is 13.5 metres. By the beginning of June, this is expected to be confirmed as 14.8 metres. The new restriction of the navigation channel will allow the ships to operate with a draft of 13.2 metres. This reduction is due to the fact that the Brazilian Navy requires a safety space between the keel of the vessel and the bottom of the channel.
Unifeeder offers new service from Barcelona and Valencia to Algiers
New shipping service from Barcelona and Valencia to Algiers According to sources of Intramediterráneo, commercial agents of Unifeeder in Spain, the Danish shipping company currently operates in the Mediterranean with a fleet of 13 container ships. The new regular service from Barcelona and Valencia to Algiers' Old Port offers a two day transit time from the Catalan capital. The new route's first shipment took place last Saturday, 18 May, when the ship "Pioneer Lake" left Barcelona bound to Algiers. The "Pioneer Lake" is a container ship with a capacity for approximately 1,000 TEU, and in addition to transporting local goods from both Spain and Algeria, it will also accept cargo from transoceanic lines for their later redistribution in Northern Africa.

Kiel Canal Old North (small) lock will be closed from May 30 until end of August 2013 due to maintenance works. Old south (small) lock will be reopended End of June 2013. In this time only both new locks will be opended to the traffic. This also means that all pleasure boats will have to use the new locks together with the merchant ship traffic.
