Crews of sanctioned oligarch yachts can be paid

Wed Oct 25 11:01:36 CEST 2023 Timsen

The Burgess Crew Services (BCS) has been granted a license by the UK government to pay the crews of the 'Luminosity' and 'Alfa Nero 'the salaries that were withheld due to sanctions. Having secured the licence from the Office of Financial Sanctions Implementation (OFSI), crew members who were employed on board the yachts at the time sanctions were imposed will likely get their salaries before the year’s end. The license allows Burgess Crew Services (BCS) PCC Ltd. to pay all outstanding agreed salaries and notice as set out in the termination of employment letters issued to each crew member in March 2022 at the time the sanctions were imposed. It also allows BCS to pass on the 'Alfa Nero' gratuity to the crew that was agreed upon before sanctions were imposed. Due to the nature of the sanctions, however, Burgess is unable to pay any salaries for any work or services that occurred past the date of the owner’s designation. A large proportion of the money held to pay the crew is in US dollars and authorities require any transaction using US dollars to have an Office of Foreign Asset Control (OFAC) license first. Despite this, Burgess remained hopeful that both crews will be paid in full before the end of the year. BCS was also applying for a license to release the money from the Policy & Resources Committee in Guernsey,” says Medd. Both yachts allegedly belong to the sanctioned Russian oligarch Andrei Guryev, who was sanctioned by the UK, EU and US shortly after the invasion of Ukraine.

Abandoned yacht left Falmouth

Mon Oct 23 12:40:20 CEST 2023 Timsen

The 'Alfa Nero' was spotted leaving Jolly Harbor, Antigua, on Oct 19. The yacht had been abandoned by its owner back in February 2022 in Falmouth Harbor. The vessel had been docked in St. John’s Harbor at the Yacht Club Marina, which was gutted by fire along with several neighboring businesses. The ship has anchored at Saint Kitts and Nevis in close proximity to the Charleston Ferry Pier.

Former Google CEO withdrew bid for seized yacht

Tue Sep 12 09:30:35 CEST 2023 Timsen

The 'Alfa Nero', which was seized in Antigua after Russia's attack on Ukraine because the owner, the Russian fertilizer billionaire Andrey Guryev, was on the US sanctions list, had actually been bought by Google's former CEO, Eric Schmidt. But now he has withdrawn the bid due to legal tug-of-war over the ownership. The ship was put up for auction with Google's former CEO, Eric Schmidt, being the highest bidder. The bid amounted to 67,6 million dollar, well over half of the estimated value of 120 million dollar. But the ship did not belong to the Russian billionaire at all, he claimed. He has certainly used the yacht numerous times, but then he had just rented it, one of his legal advisers claimed. But the American authorities did not buy it - and therefore they lifted the sanctions on the ship and allowed the state of Antigua and Barbuda to put the ship up for auction. Then the daughter of the Russian tycoon appeared and claimed ownership of the 'Alfa Nero'. However, it was rejected by the court in Antigua, which gave permission for the auction, which Eric Schmidt won. But according to him, there was still uncertainty about the ownership, as Andrey Guryev's daughter continued her fight for the yacht, and that's why he withdrew his bid for the 'Alfa Nero'. Thus, Antigua must continue to pay the more than 100,000 dollars per month, the ship is believed to cost until they get the yacht sold. The second highest bid for the superyacht was made by the American businessman, Warren E. Halle, but it was unkwown whether he was still interested.
