ANL WANGARATTA 9334167

Wed Sep 08 10:09:48 CEST 2010 Timsen

On Sep 7 a stranded fisherman reached the West Swanson dock at Melbourne on board the "ANL Wangaratta" where he will spend the next two days before the ship leaves for Sydney, from where he will fly back home to his family in Papua New Guinea. The man from Noga who had been fishing on tuna had been drifting for three weeks before the crew of the ship spotted his f/v drifting in the Saint Andrew Strait off the Papua New Guinea coast after a change in wind and currents had swept his boat out to sea. The "ANL Wangaratta" detected him en route from China to Melbourne with a cargo of electrical goods, and picked him up about 50 nautical miles from the coast. The fully laden ship turned and closed in to 40 metres of the capsized boat. A lifebuoy attached to a rope was tossed to the single man who was pulled to the ship’s ladder then. He was immediately admitted to the ship’s hospital where he was treated for hypothermia, dehydration and shock.
