Number of immigrants at 595, 21 people arrested

Fri Nov 28 10:26:29 CET 2014 Timsen

Greek port authorities conducting a preliminary investigation arrested 21 people who were aboard the "Baris", including seven crew members, two immigrants suspected of being traffickers and 12 immigrants who caused tension on the ship. In the meantime, authorities completed the safe transfer of all the undocumented immigrants ashore at tIerapetra on the Aegean island of Crete. The immigrants qwew hosted temporarily at the city's indoor sports hall, while authorities were waiting until Nov 28 to perform the official counting. According to the first estimations, the total number of immigrants aboard the freighter was 595. The aim now was to bring the traffickers to justice. The vast majority of the immigrants were from Syria. Migrants ship reached Crete

Thu Nov 27 11:53:31 CET 2014 Timsen

More than 700 people, mostly refugees from Syria, began disembarking the "Baris" on Crete after a harrowing journey on the smuggling ship "Baris" that broke down in gale-force winds while trying to reach Europe. The "Baris" lost engine power on Nov 25 in international waters off Crete, and reached the coastal town of Ierapetra after being slowly towed for 40 hours by the Greek navy frigate "Hydra". The passengers included many refugees from Syria with a large number of women and children. They were exhausted but overall in good health. The Greek Coastguard started disembarking women and small children, a small group of whom was given preliminary care and food before being taken to temporary shelter at a basketball arena.
