Yacht presumably sank in the Indian Ocean

Thu Dec 15 22:06:07 CET 2016 Timsen

Skipper Kito de Pavant has given up hope to find the "Bastide Otio". He was forced to abandon the Vendée Globe and leave his sailboat in the Indian Ocean following a keel damage nine days ago. After the "Marion Dufresne" came to his rescue, the yacht was left behind adrift. The skipper continued to track his ship and hoped to regain it off the Kerguelen Islands. He even went to the island to organize an expedition, but for more than 40 hours the beacons which allowed to follow the position of the sailboat hour by hour did no longer emit. It was therefore likely that the boat eventually lost its keel and capsized or sank. The beacons were therefore under water and will never give the position of the boat again.

Single hand sailor rescued

Wed Dec 07 17:52:34 CET 2016 Timsen

Kito de Pavant, Skipper of the "Bastide Otio" was successfully rescued from his stricken yacht on Dec 7 in the morning, while competing in the Vendée Globe solo round-the-world event. The boat suffered damage to its keel in the southern Indian Ocean. The 55-year-old was recovered by the supply ship "Marion Dufresne II" which was cruising 110 miles from the site of the incident. The ship had arrived in the area the previous evening but had to wait until dawn on the spot to start the rescue. In the morning, an unidentified floating object caused keel damage on the "Bastide Otio", causing the engine compartment to be flooded. The boat had suffered very serious damage that was impossible to repair and potentially dangerous for his safety.
