The 12 hostages, two Germans and 10 East Europeans, were released on July 4, 2010. They were now treated aboard a Nigerian trawler. The "BBC Polonia" had already been secured by the Nigerian navy in Bonny near Port Harcourt. In contrast to earlier reports no one was killed but one crew member hurt in a shooting and treated in hospital.

Gunmen attacked the "BBC Polonia" off the coast of the oil-producing Niger Delta, wounding one crew member and kidnapping 12 foreign sailors. The crew members seized near Bonny in southern Rivers state on July 2, 2010, have not been identified, but the military believe they are from eastern Europe. A security official said the hostages were from Germany, Latvia, Lithuania, Russia and Ukraine. The gunmen shot one dead and took others hostage. Military officials were in contact with the kidnappers, demanding the immediate release of the hostages.
