Hatch covers blown into the Rhine

Tue Aug 30 09:28:12 CEST 2011 Timsen

On Aug 26, 2011 at 1 p.m., the "Insula" from Nieuw Lekkerland lost 32 hatch covers in a storm on the Rhine at Wesel. The aluminum plates which covered the cargo of 3,000-tons gypsum were measuring 2.50 x 10.05 metres. Seven of them were eventually blown up to the right bank of the river at km 828.6). Others sank in the Rhine. The swirling hatches also damaged the wheelhouse of the ship, a ventilation shaft and a GPS receiver. The damage amounts to an initial estimate of around 100 000 €.
