Freighter located missing angler boat

Mon Feb 06 09:09:18 CET 2017 Timsen

On Feb 4, 2017, the "Bothniaborg" assisted in the search for zwo anglers who had been in distress off Fehmarn. The a large-scale search had been launched with German and Danish forces as well as the federal police after the two men had reported to the police at about 5 p.m. about an extremely bad cell phone connectionthat they got lost in fog with a 4,5-meter long boat some hourse after they set off from Puttgarden for fishing. The boat suffered technical problems and was now drifting on the Baltic Sea in the dark. The men from Hamburg could not provide any information about their position. Immediately, the MRCC in Bremen triggered an extensive search involving the lifeboat "Bremen" of the DGzRS station Großenbrode, the "Heiligenhafen" rof the station Heiligenhafen voluntary station as well as the "Bad Düben" of the federal police and the multi-purpose vessel "Scharhörn" After a short time the search area was extended to the Danish waters, and two units of the Danish sea rescue service were added. Bremen Rescue Radio alerted the surrounding shipping. At around 6:20 p.m. the "Bothniaborg", approaching the Kiel Bight enroute from Pitea to Bremen, made a conspicuous observation: a small, weakly illuminated boat hardly to be detected on the radar about eight nautical miles northwest of Fehmarn. The MRCC sent the "Bad Düben", which was closest to this point, to the named position, where the two men were found in their boat and taken on board. They were doing well ragarding the circumstances. At 7:21 p.m. the daughter boat of the "Bremen" took over the two men and the boat from the "Bad Düben". They were landed ashore in Orth at 10.18 cp.m. During the search dense fog banks obstructed the visibility.
