Temporary repairs have commenced

Tue Jun 18 09:27:49 CEST 2019 Timsen

The "Burgan" has shifted from the dry dock jetty to CUFL Jetty for repairs on June 17. Temporary repair works were expected to commence on June 18 at least. The "X-Press Mahananda" has been taken berth at Jetty No.13 of Chittagong Port on June 16 being towed by a port tug. The vessel was currently discharging its containers, after which the repair works will commence. The bow has been breached at multiple regions. The ships could only be detached after 48 hours of frantic efforts. A team of the port's marine department finally managed to separate the ships on June 16 at 08.30 a.m. After initial attempts had failed, the ships were moved to the dry dock jetty to clear the channel for vessel movements. Subsequently, the ballast water was drained from both the vessels before separating them. The container ship was berthed at Jetty 11 and tanker kept at Dolphin Jetty 7. The 'X Press MAhananda' been berthed in Qinzhou for permanent repairs from July 21 to Sep 29 and arrived in Nansha as first port of call after repairs on Oct 11. The 'Burgan' had been repaired in Dubai from Juli 10 until Sep 14 and arrived back in Chittagong on Oct 3.

Collision in Chattogram port

Fri Jun 14 12:16:05 CEST 2019 Timsen

The "Burgan", while leaving Chittagong port in ballast, was in collision with the Singapore-flagged container m/v “X-press Mahananda” (IMO: 9348998), which was entering port coming from Colomo, Sri Lanka. The accident happened near Guptaband point in the Karnaphuli channel of Chattogram port on June 14 at 8.30 a.m. The feeder, carrying 700 containers, was entering the port channel, and the "Burgan" was leaving port, when they hit bow on bow near the Chittagong Dry Dock and the Boat Club. Both ships suffered significant bow damage. Vessel movement at Chattogram port was halted following the accident, but was cleared four hours after its suspension. The two vessels were separated and moved from the channel to a dock at the Sea Beach Road on the Karnaphuli River, using five tugs of the port authority, around 12:30 p.m. The ships were finally separated on June 16. The container ship was to be taken to a container terminal to offload all of her cargo. The "Burgan" will sail to Kuwait after completing emergency repairs, for regaining seaworthiness.
