Inadequate maintenance and poor weather contributed to collision in 2014

Tue Oct 20 11:20:56 CEST 2015 Timsen

Inadequate maintenance and poor weather contributed to the collision between the "Royal Pescarores"" and the Hongkong flagged "Da Heng Shan" in May 2014, the Australian Transport Safety Bureau has found. The "Royal Pescadores" lost its anchorage during bad weather before drifting into the "Da Heng Shan", causing damage to both vessels. The "Royal Pescadores"' anchoring equipment had been poorly maintained but also issues with the Fremantle vessel traffic service (VTS) were identified, which led to a delay in implementing measures in worsening weather conditions. The Fremantle VTS has revised its weather-related procedures since the incident and upgraded equipment to better identify changes in wind speed, according to the report.
