Coast Guard responds to leak at ship in Calcasieu Ship Channel

Fri Nov 18 18:41:37 CET 2011 arnekiel

As of Thursday, the Coast Guard continued to respond to a solvent leak south of the Calcasieu Ship Channel after securing the leak at 4 a.m. The source of the leak was determined to be xylene from the vessel Chembulk New Orleans, which docked at the Citgo refinery just south of the I-210 bridge on Wednesday afternoon. According to Citgo officials, when the leak was discovered, the transfer to the ship was immediately halted by the company, the spill was contained and notifications to all appropriate agencies were made. An investigation team was enacted and air monitoring conducted. Officials with the company state that after continuous air monitoring, no impact to the surrounding community was found. The channel remained closed as of Thursday to recreational and deep draft traffic in the vicinity of the leak. However some commercial vessels were being escorted through the safety zone on a case-by-case basis. http://www.sulphurdailynews.com/news/x1944403512/Citgo-Coast-Guard-respond-to-leak-in-ship-channel
