Allision in Livorno

Mon Jul 31 09:22:54 CEST 2017 Timsen

On July 29, 2017, at 6.a.m. the "Cruise Smeralda" hit a concrete pylon at the mouth of the Livorno harbour. The incident was caused by an electrical failure. The ship, which had come from Olbia, was taken in tow and moored at the Grimaldi dock. The damage was substantial. Inspite of that, almost 900 people, including tourists and truckers, destined to Olbia were allowed to board the ferry at around 8.30 a.m. There was no air conditioning on board, and they were dropped off again at about 12.30, the time when the company announced the cancellation of the sailing. To some of them, Grimaldi offered a ticket refund, while others offered a ticket to travel by other companies. On July 31 the ferry was still docked at the Terminal Darsene Toscana in Livorno.
